One of Northern Kentucky's and the state's best basketball players is
Covington Catholic senior Evan Ipsaro, who will be heading to Oxford,
Ohio, next fall to play collegiately for the Miami Redhawks. In the
meantime, the all-star point guard, who has scored 1,000+ points in his
varsity career, will be aiming to help bring a state title to the
Colonels' basketball program. Last season, the 30-5 Colonels were 35th
District and 9th Region champions and made it to the Sweet Sixteen
semifinals in the state tournament. He is leading a program with a
notable winning tradition -- Over the last 10 years, the Colonels have
won two state championships and six regional titles under head coach
Scott Ruthsatz. Covington Catholic is ranked No. 1 in this season's
Northern Kentucky preseason coaches' poll.
Evan begins his senior season after an impressive junior campaign in
which he averaged 21.7 points a game, 5.8 assists, 2.4 rebounds, 2.8
steals and shot 57.4% from the field and 90.2% from the free-throw line
(second in the state). Top games included those vs. North Laurel (34
points), Roswell, GA (38 points) and Lexington Dunbar (32 points). He
started strong this year, too, scoring 30 points vs. St. Henry and 33
points (10 rebounds) vs. Bracken County. In his first five games this
season, Evan has team-high averages of 27.4 points, 6.6 assists and 5.8
rebounds for the 5-0 Colonels.
Evan earned many honors, including being named MVP of the district and
regional tournaments and was named to the state all-tournament team. He
was also Northern Kentucky Div. I Player of the Year, first-team
all-state and was selected to play in the Kentucky-Indiana Junior
All-Star game. He played his freshman year of basketball at New Richmond
High School, where he was named SBAAC Player of the Year. Evan was a
great youth soccer player before turning his attention fully to
basketball.
A good student who is active in community service, Evan plays his club
basketball for the Indiana Elite team. His favorite athlete is Larry
Bird, favorite entertainer is Adam Sandler, favorite book is The
Outliers, favorite movie is Vacation (the Ed Helms version) and
most-like-to-meet is Bill Gates.
COACH'S QUOTE – "Evan is a special talent and a winner! He comes
to practice every day with a positive attitude and winning mindset. He
elevates everyone around him."
— Scott Ruthsatz, Varsity Basketball Coach
