La Salle senior quarterback Zach Branam has a tough act to follow this
season, coming on the heels of his junior campaign when he led the
Lancers to the Div. II Ohio state championship, a 34-17 win over
previously unbeaten Massillon Washington. It was La Salle's fourth state
football title in six seasons. La Salle this season is rated as the top
team in Ohio in a MaxPreps.com preseason poll.
Last season, Zach amassed 3,070 yards (1,676 passing, 1,394 rushing) of
total offense while accounting for 35 total touchdowns (21 passing, 14
rushing). For his accomplishments, he was named first team GCL South,
first team all-city Div. II (Enquirer), first team SWO District and
third team all-Ohio Div. II offense.
Zach had numerous impressive games along the way to a 13-2 record and
the state title. In a big win vs. Moeller, he rushed for 253 yards and
five touchdowns, which tied a school record. In the regional title game
vs Harrison, he passed for 155 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing
for another 104 yards. He then accounted for four touchdowns (3 rushing,
1 passing) in the state semifinal game win vs. Toledo Central Catholic.
This season started in exciting fashion: In the schedule opener, La
Salle pulled off a last-second 53-52 victory, beating Elder at The Pit
in double overtime on a game-winning two-point conversion by Zach. He
was 10-for-17 passing for three touchdowns, plus he ran for 185 yards
and three more TDs. For good measure, he also kicked a 28-yard field
goal.
A great student (4.5 GPA), he is active in community service with about
140 service hours. His favorite athlete and most-like-to-meet is LeBron
James, favorite entertainer is Kevin Hart, favorite book is the Maze
Runner series and favorite movie is Step Brothers.
COACH'S QUOTE – "Zach is a leader on and off the field. His hard
work, dedication and team-first attitude have allowed him to excel on
the field and in the classroom. Zach is the type of young man that
will be successful in whatever he does."
— Pat McLaughlin, Football Coach
