One of Northern Kentucky’s best shooting guards is Newport senior Yamil Rondon, who helped lead this year’s Wildcats to a runner-up finish of the 9th Region All-A Classic tournament.
After playing his first varsity years at Cooper High School, Yamil transferred to two-time Ninth Region defending champion Newport High for his senior season. Newport was ranked #1 in Northern Kentucky in a coaches' preseason poll.
As the floor leader on Cooper's team last season, Yamil averaged 13 points and 2.9 rebounds in helping the Jaguars finish with a 24-9 record. He made 27 three-pointers and had double-digit scoring games vs. Highlands (28 points), Madison Southern (22 points) and St. Xavier (20 points). He was among the top vote-getters on the Division I all-conference team selected by local coaches and was named first-team all-NKY by the Enquirer. He also plays AAU basketball for the Moss Elite club team.
In the summer of 2023, Yamil earned a gold medal as a member of the Puerto Rico under-17 boys' junior national basketball team that won the Centrobasket Championship, a five-day international tournament held in Belize. In the title game, Yamil had 12 points and three assists for the Puerto Rico team that defeated Dominican Republic to win the tournament.
A good student, Yamil has not yet committed to a college for next year. In his spare time, he enjoys listening to music and hanging with friends.
